Tiki is a wild caught blue and gold macaw. Her story is quite interesting. Her owner developed an allergy to her after 20 plus years, requiring medication and oxygen! He was attempting to find a suitable home for her with no success. This is where I came into the picture……..

Life works in mysterious ways. When he was admitted to the hospital, he was my patient. I did not know the cause of his illness till after a couple nights taking care of him. Once I found out that it was due to a bird, I offered to help him out. Then he told me his bird was a macaw! I never owned one before and really did not have room at the time. He listened and was discharged a few days later back home with Digger.

A year later, after some trouble locating me, he left a message where I work. After an interview at his house (Digger wanted to take a bite out of me), and an interview at mine, Digger found another place to call home. Finally, my patient could start to physically heal.

I started calling Digger “Tiki” for some reason and it stuck. She loves to give me kisses now and shreds up anything including other birds! She loves to dig too. That is how she obtained her original name. Tiki is not talkative. An occasional “up” and “Bob” are just about it.

I have to watch her close around other birds and people. She has destroyed a few nice things, but that was my fault. Birds love to chew………..

The next year, her previous owner stopped by for a visit. She stepped right up and gave him a kiss.
